Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System

Learn about the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System 2015 training after its alignment with the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) in Canada, an internationally consistent approach to classifying chemicals and communicating hazard information through labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDSs).

Participants will learn about the expected impacts of these changes for chemical suppliers and employers, how to transition a workplace to the new requirements, how to understand labels and identify hazards and their classes, as well as understand the appropriate protective measures by reading the new Safety Data Sheets (SDS's). Certification: Training for WHMIS is required to be done regularly or anytime a new WHMIS-regulated product is introduced into the workplace. Training must include practical application of the theory such as preparing workplace labels and reading Safety Data Sheets (SDS's) particular to the employee's workplace hazards. There is no expiry date on WHMIS certifications in Canada, though all employees who work around or with hazardous materials and WHMIS regulated products are required to be trained regularly. Best practices is annual certification or more frequently for dangerous chemicals and those requiring more significant measures of protection. Employees with less dangerous exposure can be trained as deemed appropriate.

Additional Training Option - Respirator Fit Testing: Additional training on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as Respirator Fit Testing/Certification should be considered if a chemical or product being used requires the use of a respirator. Workplace regulations require fit testing and training every two (2) years. Please see our course dates here for public course options or inquire about adding this to your WHMIS training session.

Course Includes: Participant workbook and course notes, wall certificate, laminated wallet card, and a record of training for companies registering employees. Inclusion in our reminder system is also included so organizations can be reminded of when regular training may be needed.
